Chapter Fifteen

It wasn’t like in the movies. He didn’t pass out and stay that way. Instead, his world became a series of broken, moving pictures. He was aware of a presence closing in. Fearful it was the berserker, he growled and lashed out weakly, but the man easily stopped his clawed hand.

“Easy, William, it’s me. It’s Errick,” said the man.

Sometime after that he was aware of being carried, then a car ride that seemed very short but probably wasn’t, because he woke eventually in his bed at the house in the Poconos. Moonlight poured around the closed drapes of his room. He was sore and stiff, and his body felt like it weighed a thousand pounds. It hurt to breathe, and it hurt more to move.

Someone was shouting. It sounded like Saada. He forced himself to crawl from the bed and onto the floor, then out of his room and into the hallway. His hands skidded in his own blood from his aggravated wounds as he worked his way to the top of the stairs.

“How could you have left him?” Saada was shouting in a scathing voice. “You knew we were all in danger. You knew he needed you…!”

“He didn’t want me to stay!” Errick shouted back, almost getting in her face. “He made that clear enough!”

“And since when have you ever listened to what William wants!”

Errick turned away and paced a few steps, his head down. William could tell that he was grinding his teeth, that he was blaming himself for what had happened, and a huge part of his heart hurt to see it. “I couldn’t bear to be there, Saada. I couldn’t stand being in the same room with him, wanting him so badly, yet knowing I could never compete with…them.” Errick hung his head and sighed. “Saada, I’m sorry…I just…I don’t think straight around William…” Errick slowly became aware of William crouched at the top of the stairs, bleeding all over the floor.

“Errick…” he began.

Errick rushed up the stairs to carry him back to bed.

“Saw it…” William managed, looking up into Errick’s frightened and guilt-ridden eyes. “I saw the thing…”

“Rest, William,” Errick said, lowering him to the surface of the bed and laying down protectively at his side. He wrapped an arm around William’s waist and pressed his face into the side of William’s neck. William swallowed, his body slowly relaxing at Errick’s touch. He was still so sore, but it was nice to be held this way. “Sleep,” Errick instructed him, “you’re badly injured and right now you need to sleep.”

Again darkness snatched him away.

When next he woke, day had replaced the night and his room glowed faintly with the grey light of early dawn. He moved, growling with distress, and noticed Errick sitting at his bedside. Had Errick stayed with him all night? He put his hand upon William’s arm. “William…”

“I’m awake,” he managed after a moment. “Thirsty.”

Errick fetched him a glass of water with a bendy straw while the others slowly filtered into the room and gathered around his bed.
